The idea for characters sometimes come from inside a business. Googles Android's robot did and with professional help, it became one of the most recognised characters in tech. Here's how, while you have a look around.

Dandroids

Before Irina's robot existed, an engineer called Dan Morrill needed something, anything, to put on a slide for an internal talk. He knocked up four rough robots in Inkscape one afternoon.

The sketch

Irina Blok was asked to look at it with a more professional design eye. She designed the more geometric character above. The mascot grew legs. Literally.

Letting go

Google didn't lock the drawing down. They let anyone use it, change it, colour it however they liked. People did, by the thousand.

2014

Seven years on, the only real change was the shade of green. Nobody touched the shape Irina drew.

The structure

Eventually, grids, angles, exact proportions were built proper rules around it and it was bought to life even more.

Twelve feet tall

It ended up cast in fibreglass, standing on the grass outside Google's offices in California. Not bad for a five minute doodle.

It's a very typical story of a character built from the inside, given room to grow.
